‘Private security’ department aims for improved oversight
THE National Police’s Department for Private Security Management urged officials to pay attention to gated communities – known locally as borey – condominiums and apartments to prevent problems from arising as part of the “safe villagecommune” policy more effectively.
Department director Lim Sokha Raskmey made the call while chairing a monthly meeting on March 10.
Sokha Raskmey set out some work directions such as focusing on the management of private security, providing services to enterprises and establishing better oversight of private security in condominiums to prevent crime.
According to the National Police, the department will continue to provide skills training to all private security agencies to strengthen their capacity and knowledge in order to contribute to maintaining law and order.
As of December, 32 private security agency training courses had been conducted, with 113 officials from the department and municipal and provincial police departments providing training to a total of 5,737 private security agent trainees.
The launch of these skills training courses was in response to the need to increase the capacity of private security guards to become qualified private security agents to contribute to the maintenance of stability, security, safety, order of society as well as promote the safe villagecommune policy.
Sin Mongkul, a resident of a borey in Phnom Penh, said increased attention to security management was a good thing because problems are mostly caused when unprofessional guards are hired.
“Most offences are caused by a lack of attention from the police. So if there is an additional push at this point for additional private security, I support it as it makes me feel safer,” he said.
