PM to electorate: Register to vote now for ‘23 election

- Vann Sak

PRIME Minister Hun Sen has renewed his calls for people of all political affiliations to register to vote and exercise their right in the general election scheduled for July next year.

He also urged all political parties, whether they run candidates in the next election or not, to tell their members to register to vote and keep their names current on the voter list.

“Now I renew my calls for people of all political affiliations to go and register to vote and young people who turn 18 to go and register to vote. Otherwise, the exercise of their right to vote will not be possible.

“Only those who are registered to vote can ensure their own right to vote. So, every citizen, please go and register to vote,” he stated while speaking at a November 1 graduation ceremony for over 6,000 students at the Royal University of Law and Economics.

Hun Sen said that the democratic process must be conducted on a regular basis to be legitimate and for Cambodia that meant an election held once every five years.

“Electoral registration at this point has been modernised and we can offer this opportunity to all of our citizens,” he also said.

The National Committee Election (NEC) said that in the first 11 days of voter list review and electoral registration they had received 152, 562 new registrations, while 91,014 names were removed from the list.

The NEC added that 10,209 people had their data corrected and 47,371 people had relocated to new communes. The voter list review and voter registration period will run from October 20 until December 8, 2022, including on Saturdays and Sundays, and is available during regular business hours.

The NEC has called on people to check their names on the voter list and if necessary request that their names or other data be corrected in the commune in which they live if any of it is recorded inaccurately.
