Korea’s HMC, Canadian surgeons to provide free cleft lip and scar surgery

- Hong Raksmey

HEBRON Medical Centre (HMC), a South Korean nonprofit medical organisation, has partnered with doctors from Canada to provide free treatment for patients with cleft lips, cleft palates and scars.

“From February 6-9, we will provide medical check-ups and treatments on external surgeries and various scars,” Nov Makara, information officer of the HMC, told The Post.

HMC was established in 2007 by Woo Jung Kim to provide standardised medical assistance to Cambodians in need. The centre has thus far provided free treatment to more than 50,000 patients and carries out thousands of surgeries each year.

Starting out as a small clinic in Phnom Penh with just four South Korean doctors and 12 local members of staff, HMC has grown over the past decade, with a significant increase in the number of Cambodians.

The medical centre says that “the cultivation of local medical professionals” is at the core of its mission statement, with “doctors, nurses and management staff being trained to become future leaders in the medical industry of Cambodia”.

HMC collaborates with and receives funding from the Seoul-based WITHHEBRON non-profit organisation to carry out operations in South Korea as well as Cambodia.

Makara said: “I would like to inform the patients with the above symptoms to register and receive treatment according to the above date.

“Although the number of patients seeking treatment has not yet been determined, patients should hurry.”

According to HMC, patients are required to provide brief information such as age and sex, as well as photos of the lesion, including cleft lips, cleft palates or scarring.
