INTRODUCTION
Robert Baden-Powell published the motto ‘Be Prepared’ for the Boy Scouts in 1908 meaning “you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty.”
I confess that I’m no Boy Scout (no one that knows me will argue this point), but I find B.P.’s words are still great advice. Being ‘in a state of readiness’ to me means having the right tools to enjoy the adventure, being ready to handle ‘what if?’
The second installment of our Overland Special Editions is Gear and Tire. We’ve pulled real-life gear reviews from previous editions of 4WDrive to give you an overview of what to look for in essential overland equipment. With the right gear
you can enjoy the journey, and overcome nature’s exciting obstacles so that they are a storied part of the adventure, not a stress-inducing disaster.
The most important part of being able to move forward, or in some situations back up, has little to do with what you have under the hood, or what gear is piled on the roof (or jammed inside or towed behind). As ‘no traction’ can mean winching or towing, because you’re stuck, or worse because you’ve lost control and suffered irreparable trail or road side damage. That’s why tires are included in our exploration of what you need to ‘be prepared.’
We’ve included many of our favourite,
time-tested pieces of equipment. Let us know what your favourite piece of gear is, especially if you don’t see it here. Perhaps we’ll add it to the next edition - you could be famous
