STEP 22 TOOL STORAGE

The Pangolin just may be one of the easiest ways to keep essential tools organized and easily accessible while running the trails.

Packing a bunch of stuff in our Jeep that we’ll never use is an edge that we constantly teeter on when we go wheeling. Riding with us for the better part of a decade has been a 183-ish piece Stanley socket set. It gets the job done and the entire getup was cheap. The box all the sockets come in (like any blow moulded toolbox we’ve had) is nothing short of dumpster fodder. We’re not really sure how or why we have let this one stick around. The latches are broken, which on many occasions, has made us dig through the mud on the trail after all its contents inevitably spill out at exactly the wrong time. It had to go, but the tools could stay.

We’ve been using a Step 22 foldable “Stingray” flay box for a while to stash our air lines and larger hand tools. We are impressed with how well they have held up. But it was time to try Step 22’s Pangolin Tool Roll. The Pangolin comes with a complete wrench roll and a few different pockets that are zippered closed and affixed to the roll with Velcro. If it holds together half as well as the Stingray, it will be perfect.

We needed some socket holders to keep items somewhat organized in the Pangolin. They were a little more money than we had expected, so we decided to snoop around Thingiverse.com for a socket holder set we could 3D print. A design from bross and kmac1036 were printed to hold all the sockets on a few strips of 1/8" x 3/4" aluminum.

After swapping everything over and throwing a few extra sockets and other tools in the mix, we were extremely happy with it and still have room to spare. A multitude of other tool rolls keep popping up in our news feed, but none of them have the materials or organizational forethought that Step 22 has put into the Pangolin. Now that we have some extra space in the Jeep, it’s time to fill it up with more stuff!

?? ?? We prefer a soft-sided tool bag over a hard case. They not only fit better in tight spaces and take up less room, but they won’t knock you senseless during a vehicle roll if it’s not strapped down.
