The Hockey News - Money & Power

SCOTT O’NEIL MAY BE the busiest person in sports. Not only has he been tasked with transforming the identity of the Devils franchise, now on the upswing in a rebuild, he’s performed an even more radical overhaul with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. O’Neil serves as CEO of both teams. When he took the Devils job in 2013, he arrived to a largely broken franchise no longer resembling the proud group that won three Stanley Cups from 1995 to 2003. O’Neil’s vision was to recast New Jersey as a hockey market. He saw Devils fans as less corporate and more salt-of-the-earth, jersey-clad types compared to the suit-wearing New York Rangers fan demographic. He knew the region like few other executives as former president of MSG. He re-evaluated the way the Devils were pitched to their fan base. Under O’Neil’s guidance, New Jersey has seen significant growth in new season-ticket sales, season-ticket renewal and big-brand partnerships. – MATT LARKIN
