Writer and director Rian Johnson knocks it out of the galaxy with the best thriller in the franchise since The Empire Strikes Back. The Resistance scrambles to avoid destruction at the hands of monstrous Snoke and the Empire, but the fate of the Jedi looms large: Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and Mark Hamill’s legendary Luke Skywalker battle the Force, both good and evil. The biggest surprise: The Last Jedi is also a hearty buddy flick, mixing best-friend vibes with a dose of “I am your father.”
