V250 Introducing the stock index
YOU CAN NOW TRACK THE STOCKS OF ALBERTA’S BIGGEST COMPANIES IN REAL TIME, AND ALL IN ONE PLACE
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL FIND
Most notably, you’ll see the performance of the stock portfolio plotted on the stock chart. The portfolio is based on a one-year, $10,000 investment, meaning that if every stock were to stay frozen, the line would remain at the $10,000 mark. If the stocks are, on average, performing well, the trajectory will rise; in a bear market, it’ll fall.
As an example, when this issue of Alberta Venture was going to press, the portfolio sat around the $14,000 mark. This means that a $10,000 investment into this portfolio made one year ago would today be worth about $14,000. But you can also trace the trajectory of the portfolio as far back as a year, so you can also see that last January, the portfolio would have been worth only about $8,700, and wouldn’t have actually been profitable until March.
SOME TIPS FOR READING THE STOCKS
A one-year investment can only show us so much. Unless you’re a day trader, your investments stretch across a much longer timeline, so a one-year plot won’t give you much insight into a typical, long-term investment. Also, a rise in the stocks of Alberta’s biggest publicly traded companies doesn’t necessarily mean a parallel rise in other crucial economic indicators. (Stocks might rise, but unemployment could, too.) But this stock index is intended to give you a snapshot of the overall economy, and to let you zoom in on the trajectory of particular companies. Every year, Alberta Venture thumbs through the financial documents of Alberta’s largest public companies and assembles our massive Venture 250 issue. We give our readers company revenues, profits, assets, growth rates and more. But that information is all static, and the stock market in anything but. So this year, as part of our 20th anniversary celebration, we’ve assembled a stock portfolio featuring Alberta’s largest public companies, and we’re making it free and easy for our readers to access on our website. So you track all the market fluctuations – and get a sense of the health of our economy – anytime.
