The Town of Kentville celebrated its first official Recreation Champion Feb. 23.

Grade 4 teacher Rosslyn Gillan at Kings County Academy was the inaugural recipient.

According to Gillian Yorke, administrative assistant with Kentville Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, Gillan was chosen because she took her class outdoors for a day as a reward.

The day of outdoor winter adventure, including snowshoeing and igloo build- ing, was earned due to the class’ diligence at getting ahead with the schoolwork.

Instead of offering a trinket, or a pizza party, Gillan gave them adventure, memories and the chance to be kids in winter, Yorke noted.

“We’ve decided that we want to honour and thank those in our community who have recognized the value of recreation, and who bring recreation opportunities to people in our town,” she said.

“We were blown away by her efforts and decided to acknowledge her publically.”
