Acadia in action Rugby Axewomen secure second place finish with 45-7 win

-

A 45-7 win for the rugby Axewomen over UPEI Oct. 7 ensures the Acadia team a second place finish in the AUS.

Angela Grover had a try seven minutes into the first, which was converted by Annie Kennedy to give Acadia an early lead. Laura Pfleiderer built on the lead with an unconverted try 13 minutes later, while Natasha Johnson made it 19-0 at the 40-minute mark, with Kennedy again converting the try.

In the second half, Sarah Boudrea, Angela Grover and Emma Pfleiderer all added tries converted by Kennedy.

UPEI got on the scoreboard at 62 minutes, but couldn’t catch up with Acadia. Michaela Haley sealed the deal for the Axewomen with an unconverted try at the 80- minute mark for the final 45-7 score.

The regular season doesn’t wrap up for another week, but Acadia’s three wins are enough to secure the second seed spot and clinch a playoff berth. Acadia has only lost twice in the regular season, both times at the hands of the top- ranked St. FX., which remains undefeated.

Acadia next hits the road to play at Saint Mary’s Oct. 16, which remains winless so far this season.

Acadia cross-country team places third

The Axewomen picked up a third-place finish for the third race in a row Oct. 8 at Point Pleasant Park.

Acadia’s top competitor was Alicia Henry, who had a time of 24:29. Other Axewomen in the top 20 include Margaux McLean, Chrissy Smith and Madalyn Higgins.

The next meet is Oct. 15 in Fredericton, NB. Gillian Bergsma charges through UPEI players with the ball in Acadia’s 45-7 win Oct. 7. The victory ensured Acadia secured second place in the AUS.

Hockey win, loss

Acadia split two weekend games Oct. 7 and 8, with a 4-1 win on home ice against Saint Mary’s and a 4- 1 loss on the road to St. FX.

Brendan Childerley got the scoring started 11 minutes into the first of Acadia’s home opener, with assists going to Geoff Schemitsch and Matthew Pufahl. Saint Mary’s came back in the last minute of play to tie things up going into the second.

After that, it was all Acadia, with Brett Thompson taking the lead early in the second with the help of Sam Fioretti and Boston Leier, and Michael Clarke building on that off the stick of Childerley and Nick Betz. In the last second of play in the third, Kyle Farrell had an empty net goal for Acadia.

It was a much different story the next night. Acadia got onto the scorecard first with a goal midway through the first period by Childerley, off the stick of Tyler Ferry, but four unanswered goals by St. FX sealed the deal for the Axemen.

The road game to Antigonish on Oct. 7 was Acadia’s first regular season loss of the year.

Football loss

Danny Obieng Jr. has a oneyard run for the final touchdown, with a good kick from Jennings for the extra point.
