Zappacosta to perform in Kings County
Juno winner to entertain at Horton High School Performance Centre
A Juno award-winning singersongwriter is coming to King’s County, and will be performing with musicians who aren’t old enough to remember him.
“Who’s Alfie Zappacosta?,” says Kay Greene, Horton High School’s music teacher, imitating her students.
That’s right: Alfie Zappacosta will be playing at the Horton High School Performance Centre. On May 9 at 7p.m., he will be joined by Horton’s choir members and select brass instrumentalists.
“I’m not nervous,” says Greene. “The students are fantastic and it’s great music. But 80s pop music, it’s easy for them to learn. Some of them actually listen to 80s music.”
The students will perform choral back-up for Zappacosta’s hits Nothing Can Stand in Your Way and Overload, a song students recognized from Dirty Dancing. And even though they’ve only been practicing for less than a week, Greene says “they’ve already aced it.”
Zappacosta will likely play fan favourites, but Greene is most excited to hear his new music, calling it “quasi-acoustic.”
“He’s got a really cool new jazz sound,” she says. “He’s got just a small little group . . . and he’s got this really awesome reinvention almost of himself . . . I’m really looking forward to hearing that stuff live.”
Parts of ticket sales go to the Horton Music Department - an idea by Zappacosta himself.
“He offered to do it as a fundraiser for the music department,” says Greene. “He has to cover his costs, but he’s giving a portion of all the tickets after that to the music department, which is amazing.”
Greene says money raised from the concert will go towards performing arts camp scholarships for students during the summer months.
