Enjoy Canada Day with a trip around the world

- ANNAPOLIS ROYAL

King’s Theatre is bringing world music to Annapolis Royal with ASHK World Music Band on Canada Day.

The band includes Ariana Nasr, who in 2015 performed a full-blown “spectacle en français” featuring the music of the worldrenowned French singer Édith Piaf at King’s Theatre.

Now she returns with a spectacular new performance with her two sisters, Sahara and Kamila. The sisters have devoted many years to studying and performing music in different parts of the world including India, Afghanistan, China, Europe, and Brazil.

The word ASHK, means “love” in Turkish and “tear” in Persian. As the band performs in multiple languages and styles, playing a variety of instruments, ASHK creates a show that reflects their travels, studies and musical passions.

Ariana takes the audience to France, Eastern Europe and beyond, hearing the sounds of Edith Piaf, the Roma, and the Balkans.

Sahara explores the music of India and Persia, sharing Sufi poetry of Rumi in her own compositions. Kamila brings us to Portugal through Fado, to Brazil with hip hop and original Afghan-celtic fusion.

The sisters have teamed up with world percussionist Ken Shorley for an international tour. Shorley will transport us to the Middle East, South Asia, and Turkey as he flows effortlessly among instruments and styles.

The 7:30 p.m. performance “is the perfect way to wrap up your Canada Day celebrations, with an international exploration of multiculturalism and diversity, discovering new and interesting music and cultures,” said King’s Theatre general manager Janet Larkman.

Tickets are $24 for members, $26 in advance, $28 at the door, and $8 for youth - all at King’s Theatre, the box office at 902-5327704, or go to kingstheatre.ca/ event/ashk-world-music-band to learn more.

Bear River will celebrate Canada 150 with a ton of fun and food on the waterfront July 1 – and they’re even filling a time capsule.

The little village that straddles two counties will be putting on a big show that kicks off with a yard sale at 10 a.m. and finishes with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. In between there’s a hotdog barbecue, crafts for kids, musical entertainment, a ham and baked bean supper, and a big Canada 150 birthday cake.

Throw in a giant waterslide, a homemade pie auction, and a guided tour of the village and it makes for a full day.
