Middleton, West Kings advance to volleyball provincials after regional tournament

L’école secondaire de Clare also advancing, DRHS, New Germany Annapolis West will play at qualifiers

The western regionals girls volleyball tournament held at Central Kings was full of well-fought matches and hard-earned wins.

The tournament, held on Nov. 18 and 19, saw the 10 teams nearly deadlocked, often scoring point for point.

Northeast Kings Education Centre and Central Kings battled it out, with both games ending at 25-23 for Central Kings.

Middleton Regional High School advanced to the bronze medal game, facing l’école secondaire de Par-en-bas. Middleton came out on top after beating the school in a tight three-set match.

The final game saw West Kings face l’école secondaire de Clare, with the latter ending the game victorious after another nailbiter. Tournament organizer and Central Kings coach Scott Pope said each game at the tournament was well matched, and the tournament could not have gone better.

“There was so much excitement in the gym – parents were cheering all the players on, and the players were really into their games. There was lots of good action,” said Pope.

“First place could have gone to any of the top teams.”

Middleton, West Kings and Clare have all advanced to provincials, held at Middleton Regional High School Dec. 1-2.

Qualifiers determining which other teams will advance will happen this weekend in Halifax.

Digby Regional High School, l’école secondaire de Par-en-bas and Annapolis West Education Centre will compete alongside teams from the Capital District, the Northumberland Region, the Western Region and the Highland region.

Pope was impressed with the sportsmanship displayed by teams at this tournament, and is confident players will continue to show up with their best game and conduct this weekend, and at provincials.

“Everybody was very respectful – nothing got out of hand. The games were well-played and everyone had a great time,” he said.
