West Kings band students raising funds for New York trip
West Kings high school student raising money for band trip in New York.
Some band students at West Kings have their sights set on Broadway.
Cassandra Blight is among a group of West Kings District High School band members raising money for a trip to New York in May. The participating students must each come up with $1,300 to take part in the band trip.
The journey will include visits to several popular tourist destinations in New York City and viewings of the popular Broadway musicals Wicked and Phantom of the Opera.
They’ll also perform at a couple schools during their trip to The Big Apple.
“It’s going to be pretty interesting,” said Blight, who looks forward to having the chance to spend some extra time with her classmates and band teacher, Heather Davis, before graduation.
“I like the community of it. Our band teacher is very kind, and she’s amazing. Everyone gets along very well.”
Blight was selling Los Primos Project raffle tickets at the Greenwood Mall Jan. 6. Half of the pro-
ceeds will be used to help pay for her trip to New York, and the other half will support valuable cultural exchange opportunities between music students in Nova Scotia and Cuba.
“Los Primos has facilitated seven trips for Cuban music students to Canada and we have taken Canadian students to Cuba eight times. There have also now been many exchanges with professionals in both directions,” the non-profit organization’s website states.
Los Primos raffle tickets are sold by music students throughout Nova Scotia. The draw winner has a choice between a trip for four to Cuba, or a $4,000 cash prize.
To date, nearly 650 instruments have been donated to various students and schools in Cuba as a direct result of the fundraising undertaken in Nova Scotia to support
the Los Primos Project.
Blight, for one, is happy to know the time she’s devoting to fundraising is about more than solely securing her ticket to New York City.
“It’s pretty amazing to be able to help kids in a different part of the world just by doing a little fundraiser here in Greenwood,” she said.
