Film screenings

Fundy Cinema screens: Don’t Talk to Irene Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.. When overweight teenager Irene gets suspended from school and must endure two weeks of community service at a retirement home, she follows her passion for cheerleadi­ng and secretly signs up the residents to audition for a dance-themed reality show to prove that you do not need to be physically ‘perfect’ to be perfectly awesome.

Also showing is Wonder Jan. 14. Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay), a 10-year-old boy with a congenital facial deformity, enters fifth grade to attend a mainstream elementary school for the first time in this inspiring and heart-warming drama adapted from R.J. Palacio’s 2012 bestseller.

Wonder will be shown at 4 and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $9 and are available 30 minutes before screenings at the Al Whittle Theatre, 450 Main St., Wolfville.

Animated Movie ‘Ferdinand’

Ferdinand is the story of a giant bull with a big heart. The heart-warming movie will be shown at King’s Theatre, Annapolis Royal at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12 and 2 p.m. on Jan. 13.

After being mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure.

Tickets are $10 adult; $9 with Film Buff Card; $8 youth. Doors open 45 minutes before the show.

The Wise Men Saw the Light

This humorous cantata, written by David Holborn, a resident of Cornwallis Park, brings the story of the Magi to life in song and word.

Hear the choir sing Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at St. George and St. Andrew United Church in Annapolis Royal. No ticket is required and admission is by donation. (This was postponed from Jan. 7.)

Live At King’s Theatre

King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal has some great events ahead for the new year, according to GM Janet Larkman. She notes that tickets are on sale now for these three great events and they might just make great stocking stuffers.

-- Jan. 14 - First up is Dave Gunning and James Keelaghan at King’s Theatre on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. The pair are much love Juno and ECMA winning folk/roots artists.

-- Jan. 28 - The new year continues in style with Susan Aglukark on Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. She’s a three-time Juno-winning Inuk artist and recipient of the Order of Canada.

-- Feb. 4 – Elvira Kurt & Friends with their Girls Nite Out Comedy Fest take the stage Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. It’s five of Canada’s hottest female comedians; an absolutely hilarious night of standup, sketch comedy and improv.

Centre Stage has Drinking Habits

Who says January can be long and boring? Not the nuns at Sisters of Perpetual Sewing!

Drinking Habits by Tom Smith will make you forget the cold of winter with this laugh-out loud farce. Two nuns have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. Can the convent be saved? Come to Centrestag­e and find out!

Drinking Habits is directed by Wayne and Linda Marriott. The cast in order of appearance includes Chantal Murphy, Carolyn Landry, Bob Cook, Mindy Vinqvist-tymchuk, Darrell Doucette, Janet Westhaver, Heidi Price, Leroy Heffernan.

The featured artist is Carole Ball.

Remaining evening dates are Jan. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27, Feb. 2, 3, 9 and 10, with front of house opening at 6:45 p.m. There will be 2 p.m. matinees Jan. 14, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, with doors opening at 1:15 p.m.
