A loss for both girls and boys West Kings teams
Top competitors too much despite good effort
It just wasn’t West Kings night.
Both the girls’ and boys’ hockey teams hosted games on home ice in Kingston Jan. 19, but neither team managed to pull off a win as they faced the top competitors in their divisions.
In a battle between the topranked girls’ teams in the Valley High School Girls League, Avon View blanked the West Kings Wolverines 7-0 Jan. 19.
Avon View’s Paige Parker led the scoring with two goals, while Haley Verge, Brittany Poole, Savannah Hart, Maddie Singer and Becca Moore added in single markers.
Avon View remains on top of the girls’ league standings with 22 points, while the Wolverines remain in second with 13 points. There is currently a tie for third place between the Park View Lady Panthers and the Central Kings Gators, who have 12 points each, while the Yarmouth Vikings trail in fifth with 10 points.
Loss for the West Kings boys
The boys’ team ended up with a lopsided 10-4 loss to Horton High School.
West Kings got off to an early start on a marker from Riley Cook, but Horton came back to tie it up thanks to a goal from Hunter Woodland, then made it 2-1 with Zach Moore’s first goal of the night. Mason Sawler tied things up again two minutes later, but Horton’s Chris Landry regained the lead to close out the first period.
In the second, it was all Horton, with six goals in a row. Moore picked up his second goal of the night, while KK Pardy made it 5-2 for Horton. Blake Deacon had two in a row for Horton, then Dean Vial contributed another marker and Woodland buried his second goal of the night.
Cook got one back for West Kings with just under six minutes left in the period, but Dawson Mcphail buried the puck to get it back for Horton.
Cook made it a hat trick in the third on a West Kings power play, but by then it was too little, too late for the Wolverines.
In the highly competitive boys’ league, Horton and West Kings remain at the top of their respective divisions. Horton is well ahead in the eastern league with 26 points, while Park View has 19, Northeast Kings has 16 and Avon View has 15.
The standings are tighter at the top of the central division, where West Kings has sole possession of first place with 23 points, followed by Central Kings with 20 points. Digby is in third with eight points and Middleton is in fourth with just four points.
