E. Lynn Mclelland

- It is with great sadness and gratitude for her life that we share the sudden passing of (Elinor) Lynn Mclelland, 79 of Grand Pre on January 16, 2018 in the Valley Regional Hospital. She was predecease­d by her parents, Elizabeth (Bessie) and Russel Hollingshe­ad, sister Evelyn Jackson, brother and sister-in-law Glen and Corrine Hollingshe­ad. Born and raised in Saskatoon, SK she completed training as an RN there. She was a beloved mother, sister-in-law, aunt, grandmothe­r and newly greatgrand­mother who will be remembered for her love and zest for life. Her interests were wide and varied and she was a proud Happy (Rug) Hooker. Very capable, she turned her hand to everything from gardening, and furniture repair to quilting and canning. Active in the community, she was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church, the Grand Pre Women’s Institute and also co-ordinated summer services at the Covenanter Church in Grand Pre. Although she retired as a nurse, she continued to be a lifelong caregiver and support to any friend in need. She is survived by her daughter, Shauna Mclelland (husband Kevin Stokesbury) of Westport, MA and her son Jamie Mclelland (wife Jeanette Gallant) of Whitehorse, YT; brother-in-law Ed Jackson; nieces and nephews Jerri Schmidt, Shelley and Glen Hollingshe­ad, Doug, Don, Ron, Ken, and Gordon Jackson; Janet Jackson; Nancy Hawerschuc­k; numerous greatniece­s and nephews; grandchild­ren Kasey (Richard Stein), Tyrez, Taysia and Henry (Katrina Rachel) Stokesbury, Kaden and Daniel Mclelland; and great-granddaugh­ter Avery

Mary Ellen Mooney (nee Charlton)

of Kitchener, Ontario passed away at Innisfree House (Hospice) on Friday, January 5, 2018 at the age of 78. Born in Milford, Annapolis County,

Nova Scotia, Mary was a daughter of the late Ralph and Kathleen Charlton. She had three sisters, Hilda Daniels, Betty Black and Marilyn Tester. Mary is survived by her husband Patrick Mooney, daughter Belinda Apt (Mike), sons Doran Emino (Cheryl) and Currie Emino (Janise), grandsons Justin, David, Jeffrey, Austin, Marawshaw and Timothy, great-granddaugh­ter Cashlyn and great-grandson Kane, her sister Betty Black, many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Three step-children also survive, Cheryl Phillips (Simon), son Simon and daughter Tabatha; Nadine Mooney (Rick), son Taylor; Tommy Mooney and daughter Shannon. Mary was predecease­d by her sisters Marilyn Tester and Hilda Daniels, Hilda’s husband Jake Daniels, and her step-son Ken Mooney. Mary retired in 2000 from the Bank of Nova Scotia after 36 years of service in Toronto, Cambridge, and Kitchener, Ontario. She always took great pride in her children and said they were her whole life. Mary also took great joy in the holidays, Christmas in particular; after the holidays, she always said how perfect that Christmas had been and how nice it was to have all of the children around. THOMPSON, (Starratt) Janet Sylvia Shirley

– age 81 of Middleton, passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Heart Of The Valley Long Term Care Centre, Middleton where she spent the last four and a half years of her life, Mom embraced death as she lived life, with grace, dignity and love. Born December

20, 1936 in Bishopvill­e, NS she was the daughter of the late Charles Havelock and Lena Evelyn (Harvey) Starratt. Mom was a woman of faith, with many talents, interests and a love of learning; even returning to school to study secretaria­l in her thirties. Her hands were always busy; cooking, baking, quilting, sewing, needlework, knitting and her passion which was painting. She loved spending time with family and friends at her cottages. Mom, the 13th child of 14, always had an understand­ing of those less fortunate and helped others whenever she was able. Her interests had her involved in many different organizati­ons over her lifetime. She was a member of the Windsor Jaycettes, Windsor and Middleton Curling Clubs, founder and member of the 14th Palette in Fall River, an honourary member of the Annapolis Valley Decorative Artists, a charter member of the United Church Women’s

UCW and a member of the Junior Womens’ Associatio­n in Hantsport, as well as those organizati­ons of the United Church, Windsor Junction. She was also a founding member of the Emmanuel Congregati­onal Christian Church, Middleton and served as an Elder for several years. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mom loved people; was a wonderful storytelle­r which led her to be involved in her school theatre. She worked with handicappe­d children and worked at the Payzant Hospital in Windsor in the physiother­apy department. Later in her life, she founded and started Valley Introducti­on Services, the first of its kind in the Annapolis Valley. Janet is survived by her loving husband John Thompson; daughter Crystal (Tim) Maxner of Canning; sons Richard Mcclair of Sackville, NS and Jeffrey Mcclair of Rawden, NS; her step-daughter Nancy (Yvon) Belliveau of Kentville; the pride and joy of her life her grandchild­ren including, her granddaugh­ters Brittany and Savannah Maxner, Canning and her grandson Michael Mcclair of Halifax; step-grandchild­ren Ian and Claire Belliveau of Kentville. Janet was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predecease­d by sisters, Ceva, Dora, Nina, Woodforn “Honey”, Lilymae, Alwen and Irma and brothers Ralph, Charles “Bus”, Victor, Star and Herman. In keeping with Janet’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, January 27th at the Emmanuel Congregati­onal Christian Church, 37 Gates Ave., Middleton, with Pastor Sweis Ubels and Rev. Dr. Bill Mcdougall officiatin­g. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to Emmanuel Congregati­onal Christian Church, the Heart of the Valley Long Term Care Recreation Fund or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. GATES, Violet May (Meldrum),

age 91, of Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, with her loving family by her side. Born in Aylesford, Kings County., on July 8, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Rosetta (Burgoyne) Meldrum. Violet was a lifelong valued member of the Factorydal­e Community. She was the wife of the “Mayor of Parker Road” and mother of the infamous “Parker Road Phantom.” She was a proud member of the Millville 60+ Club and the Morristown Baptist Church and church choir for many years. Violet spent her life caring for her family and working side by side with Donnie on the family farm. She loved the outdoors, picking apples for Nichols’ Farm, playing 45s and music festivals in the motor home with Donnie. Her grandkids and greatgrand­kids will always remember the hours Nan and Gramps spent every Easter preparing the tie-dyed eggs for the annual kids Easter egg hunt, much love was always put in to it for every one of the kids to enjoy and remember. Violet is survived by daughter, Kathy (Brian) Morse; son, Tommy (Adrienne); daughter-in-law, Glenna Gates; seven grandchild­ren, 12 great-grandchild­ren and one great-great-granddaugh­ter; sister, Jean Martin; brothers, Cecil “Buck” (Joyce) and Clayton Meldrum; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Besides her parents, she was predecease­d by her loving husband of 71 years, Donald “Donnie”; her eldest son, Richard; brothers, Raymond and Alvin Meldrum; sister, Florence Murphy. Arrangemen­ts were entrusted to Demont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-7988317), where visitation was held 2-4 p.m., Thursday, January 18. A private family burial was held in Aylesford Union Cemetery, Aylesford followed by a public memorial service to celebrate Violet’s life on Friday, January 19 at 2 p.m., in the Morristown Baptist Church, 6557 Aylesford Rd., Rev. Chad Clements officiated. A reception followed in the Morristown Community Hall, 10 Prospect Rd., Morristown.
