Conditiona­l sentence for steroid smuggling

Robert Jason Volans, 44, of Kentville, has been handed a conditiona­l sentence with daily curfew and fined for smuggling or attempting to smuggle anabolic steroids into Canada, contrary to the Customs Act.

Volans changed his plea to guilty on Jan. 31. Judge Alan Tufts handed Volans a six-month conditiona­l sentence order with daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 25 hours of community service work. Volans was fined a total of $1,950.

Volans committed the offence in Kentville between Dec. 1, 2015, and Feb. 29, 2016. A charge of importing anabolic steroids into Canada without authorizat­ion, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, was dismissed on Jan. 31.

A co-accused, Michael Brian Mahaney, 50, of North Kentville, was sentenced on both charges after entering guilty pleas on Dec. 20, 2016.

Intermitte­nt custody

Codey Jerome Ernst, 25, of South Alton, has been sentenced to intermitte­nt custody for stealing property from Walmart - two PS4 games and makeup - and two counts of failing to attend court in accordance with a promise to appear.

Ernst pleaded guilty to the charges on Jan. 30. Judge Alan Tufts sentenced Ernst to 90 days of intermitte­nt custody, to be served from Fridays at 9 p.m. to Mondays at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 2 and continuing until the sentence is served.

Ernst committed the offences in New Minas on Aug. 23, 2017, and in Kentville on May 9 and Oct. 24, 2017.

A co-accused on the charge of stealing property from Walmart, Holly Dawn Maillet, 23, of South Alton, has had her matter referred to the restorativ­e justice program. She is due to return to court in May for a status report.

Suspended sentence with probation

Scott Samuel Cowell, 34, of Waterville, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for failing to comply with probation and stealing property, an energy drink, from Jo-ann’s Convenienc­e.

Cowell pleaded guilty to the charges on Jan. 30. Judge Alan Tufts handed Cowell a suspended sentence with eight months or reporting probation on each charge, to be served concurrent­ly.

Cowell committed the offences in Cambridge on Nov. 14, 2017. A charge of committing mischief was withdrawn on Jan. 30.
