Hundreds turn out for quilt show in Centreville
The yearly quilt show at the Baptist Church has come a long way since square one.
Now in its ninth year, Centreville’s Annual Quilt and Rug Hooking Show attracted hundreds of guests from May 11 and 12.
Sharon Manzer is among the group of dedicated volunteers to thank for the event, which had a display spanning multiple rooms and boasting 350 submissions this year.
“Without the quilters, we could not do this because they bring the quilts, but they also set this all up,” she said.
Visitors from throughout the province travelled to Kings County to see the displays, including groups from bus trips coming out of Prince Edward Island and Pubnico.
The quilts and rugs showcased the talents of crafters across Nova Scotia. There were opportunities for beginner and advanced quilters to show off their work, or even sell some pieces.
The event is a fundraiser for the church, and an outreach initiative at the same time. The church is used as a gathering place for a community-based quilting group on a weekly basis.
“They love to come and quilt,” said Manzer, herself a quilter.
More than 600 guests attended the quilt show last year, and 400 meals were served as part of the associated luncheon.
The wide variety of quilts available for viewing often inspires new quilters to give it a try, or helps experienced quilters think of new ideas, said Manzer.
“It’s awesome,” she said, looking into a crowd eagerly browsing through the selection.
“This is fun.”
