Wolfville area wrestler captures gold in Massachuse­tts

Seventeen-year-old Wolfville native and two-time Canadian freestyle champion Makayla Levy outscored her opponent five-toone to capture gold in an U.S. competitio­n recently.

Levy won the women’s 130pound high school division on June 10 in Springfiel­d, Massachuse­tts.

Prior to entering the tournament, Levy represente­d Canada, and competed in her first internatio­nal tournament, at the United World Wrestling Panamerica­n Games in Guatemala on May 25 to 27, where she placed eighth.

Levy said she felt good going into the competitio­n, as she had been preparing hard for the tournament in Guatemala and continued with the same Makalya Levy, 17, brought home a gold medal after competing at the freestyle wrestling championsh­ips in Massachuse­tts recently.

“I felt ready by the time that the tournament came around and was ready to bounce back

because of my fall back in Guatemala,” said Levy. “The loss just pushed me to work harder than

before and to change things.”

Levy is representi­ng Canada again in Zagreb, Croatia July 2 to 8 at the World Cadet Championsh­ips, and is excited to have yet another opportunit­y.

“I’m really excited to be given another chance to represent Canada, as well as Nova Scotia and the Valley at the World Championsh­ips in Zagreb,” said Levy.

In early April, Levy gained her second national title after winning gold at the U17/U19 Canadian Wrestling Championsh­ips in Edmonton.

Along with Levy, 16-year-old Kingsburg, N.S. native Elias Wile also earned gold at the tournament in Massachuse­tts in the Men’s 145 lbs High School Division, outscoring his opponent 10-0.
