Axemen undefeated in four games

- BY THEODORE GIESEN ACADIA ATHLETICS

The Acadia Axemen fought back in the second half of Friday night’s heated game to steal the win from the Aigles Bleus 2-1 and then added their second win of the weekend with a 5-0 victory over Memorial Sept. 16.

The Axemen remain undefeated in four games.

It was not until the 65th minute of the match that the first goal was scored. A crowded net made it difficult for Acadia keeper Pietro Nottegar to track an up-close shot from Moncton forward Jeanmichel Dako, putting Acadia in an uncomfortable position for the first time this season.

Acadia forward Travis Fenning found a loose ball near the goal line and leaped head first in heroic fashion to knock the ball in and tie the game up.

Acadia saw their first share of the lead late in the game when the tie was broken by midfielder Ryan Parris after a centering pass off a corner kick was deflected in. Parris’ goal brought the score to 2-1.

For his highlight-reel goal, Fenning was named the Subway Player of the game.

The Acadia Axemen won by five as they blanked the Memorial University Seahawks on Sunday afternoon.

The Axemen found their rhythm early, firing plenty of shots before one of Parris’ shots beat the netminder for his second of the season. Parris’ goal would be the game winner and earned him the Subway Player of the Game award.

Five minutes later, Travis Fenning gave Acadia an insurance goal.

Keeping the ball in the offensive end, the Axemen were able to give goaltender Nic Jeffries an easy shutout, requiring no saves on his part. Jeffries was more than happy to sit back and watch his defense take over.

The Axemen go on the road next weekend to play UNB and Mount Allison.
