Afternoon of music supports man’s medical costs
Bev Sheffield, who normally helps others, takes his turn receiving support
Bev Sheffield normally spends his time helping others, but was the one receiving some help recently as people gathered to enjoy music and offer their support to him in Kentville.
Nearly every chair was full as music rang through the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 on Sept. 30 in Kentville, where a fundraising event was organized in support of Sheffield for help with medical costs he is facing.
Basil Davidson is a longtime friend and music collaborator of Sheffield’s, and planned the event alongside several other musicians, including David Arenburg.
The group has been playing music together for more than 30 years, and normally organizes fundraising music events to help others. And this time, an event was organized for Sheffield instead.
“It means a lot – he’s thanked us like a hundred times so far. He’s very overwhelmed,” said Arenburg.
And since Sheffield is retired, Davidson said the mounting medical costs are even more stressing for him due to being on a limited income, which can be hard without the added expense.
The musicians who gathered for the event play together each Friday in Kentville to play and practice for upcoming benefit shows. Davidson said this benefit was even more special than others because they were playing for one of their own.
“It’s great to help anybody out, but especially another entertainer who’s helped others,” he said.
The men shook hands with many community members as they made their way up to the stage. They said of all the components of the event, any financial support for Sheffield was an added bonus.
“What he’s going to be happy about the most is seeing all of these people, and all the entertainers, more so than the financial support,” said Davidson, adding he feels proud to be part of the fundraising group.
“We help anybody that’s down and out, that’s sick – they’ll call us, and we’ll do a show. We do it for anybody. If you were in a car accident and got hurt, we’d be there.”
