New Kings RCMP detachment taking shape in New Minas

-

Construction at the future RCMP Kings District Office/ New Minas Detachment at 8833 Commercial St. continues to move forward, with rough- ins for mechanical and electrical systems complete and work on internal and external walls ongoing.

Having finished the rough-ins, construction crews are focusing on the building’s walls. Construction of interior wall frames is complete, drywall is nearing completion on the second floor and drywalling is ongoing on the first floor. On external walls, brick work, metal cladding and window framing has begun.

“The building is starting to look more and more like a detachment at this phase of the construction process,” says Insp. Dan Morrow, officer in charge of Kings District RCMP, in a media release.

“We’re at the point now that we can really visualize how the final space will look and how we’ll be using it every day.”

The new building brings together administrative units for RCMP Kings District and operational units for 73 full-time employees. This includes the Southwest Nova District Policing Officer, New Minas Detach- ment members, Major Crimes Unit, Traffic Services, General Investigation Section, Forensic Identification Services and Police Dog Services. The units will come together under one roof for improved operations and more efficient collaboration.

Construction began in October 2017 with site preparation as well as backfilling and setting the foundation. In November 2017, Nova Scotia RCMP hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the site. Construction is expected to finish in early 2019.
