Ax­e­men hand un­de­feated Huskies first loss of reg­u­lar sea­son

In their fi­nal home game of the reg­u­lar sea­son, the Aca­dia Ax­e­men top­pled the pre­vi­ously un­de­feated Saint Mary’s Huskies in a 31-2 vic­tory.

Both the Ax­e­men and Huskies were slow to start, with the first quar­ter go­ing score­less. How­ever, some highs of the first quar­ter in­cluded Aca­dia run­ning back Dale Wright rush­ing 65 yards to­tal.

The sec­ond quar­ter saw a break into the score­board for the Ax­e­men, with Bran­don Jen­nings scor­ing a 19yard field to give the Ax­e­men a 3-0 lead. Halfway through the sec­ond quar­ter, Aca­dia quar­ter­back Alex Lawrie scored the first touch­down of the game, pro­vid­ing Ax­e­men with a 10-0 lead over the Huskies.

Three min­utes af­ter Lawrie’s ma­jor, Aca­dia run­ning back Dale Wright widened the lead by scor­ing his first of two ma­jors, giv­ing the Ax­e­men a 17-0 first half ad­van­tage.

The Ax­e­men gave up a safety early in the third quar­ter, giv­ing the Huskies the only points to be scored against Aca­dia in the sea­son-end­ing game.

Wright scored his sec­ond touch- down of the af­ter­noon fol­low­ing a two-yard rush and bring­ing the Ax­e­men up to a com­fort­able lead of 24-2 at the end of the third quar­ter of play.

The ex­cite­ment con­tin­ued very shortly af­ter the open­ing of the fourth quar­ter. Sec­ondyear Ax­e­men run­ning back, Cole Estabrooks, rushed an im­pres­sive 53 yards to seal the win for the Ax­e­men, push­ing the lead to 31-2.

Aca­dia played a strong game on both sides of the ball, in­clud­ing no­table per­for­mances from Wright, who rushed for 185 yards.

Quar­ter­back Hunter Gue­nard com­pleted 18 of 31 pass at­tempts, with one in­ter­cep­tion, for a to­tal of 210 yards. Third-year line­backer Bai­ley Felt­mate led the Ax­e­men de­fense with seven tack­les and com­pletely shut­ting down the Saint Mary’s of­fense.

For the Huskies, third- year quar­ter­back Cameron Var­lardo posted seven out of 17 pass at­tempts for 64 yards. Punter Brian Hope also had an im­pres­sive game, punt­ing a to­tal of 656 yards.

Fol­low­ing the game, Ax­e­men Wright noted “the team as a whole felt very con­fi­dent and played as a whole for the se­niors to­day in the last home game,” as well not­ing in re­gard to next week’s game against the X-Men “this week we just have to fo­cus on our plays, bring­ing en­ergy the whole game and we can’t slack off.”

The Ax­e­men will face the StFX X-Men in AUS semi-fi­nal ac­tion on Nov. 3 at Oland Sta­dium at 2 p.m. af­ter a third-place record of 5-3. The Huskies will spend the first week of the post­sea­son on a firstround bye, clinch­ing first place in the AUS, with a 7-1 record.
