Pineo and Loeb duo win Music Nova Scotia Electronic Artist of the Year

A musical duo with an Annapolis Valley connection just won big at this year’s Music Nova Scotia Awards.

Mitchell Pineo, of Berwick, and JR Loeb make up the electronic music duo Pineo and Loeb, and just took home the Electronic Artist of the Year award.

Having received nominations nearly every year since 2013, they said finally winning was “unexpected,” but amazing. Especially after being up until 8 a.m. making music the day they found out.

“It was just super unexpected – we didn’t have anything prepared, and had stayed up so late the night before working on our album. This is our first big win – it’s just really exciting,” said Pineo.

The duo has been dropping beats in their typical reverse 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule – for them, work hours typically run 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. – for years and are getting ready to drop their latest album in the next two months.

With a supportive community of friends, family and fans across the province – they say their biggest fans tend to live in places from Coldbrook to Sydney, Cape Breton – the pair have moved into making music a full-time gig.

And they agree the recognition from the awards is only half the help the award association has provided them – it also matches whatever money the artists put into their business.

‘One Man, Two Guvnors’

at Lower Denton

The world of ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ mixes the criminally seedy with the pompously posh. Pratfalls, spit takes, puns, improvisation, slamming doors, audience participation, doubleentendres and triple takes: ‘ One Man, Two Guvnors’ leaves no comic stone unturned.

That shouldn’t imply any lack of genuine wit in the broad farce and bawdy humor of ‘ One Man, Two Guvnors’ when the Acadia Theatre Company’s production hits the stage at Lower Denton Hall theatre at Acadia starting Nov. 16.

An ideal farce requires events to be unfolding mostly in a state of blind panic, but ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ strikes an ingenious balance between meticulous planning and what plays like anarchic spontaneity.

This production owes no obedience to theatrical tropes, so there’s no need to brush up on Commedia dell’Arte, Christmas Pantos, or Music Hall ditties to enjoy ‘ One Man, Two Guvnors.’

Shows are Nov. 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23 at 7:30 p.m. with 1 p.m. matinees on Nov. 17 and 24.

Tickets are $15 for regular admission and $10 for students and seniors. There is also a group rate of $7 (per ticket) for a group of eight people or more. The production will be held in Lower Denton theatre at Acadia University.

Hank Williams tribute at Mermaid Nov. 17

Ryan Cook brings his Hank Wil- source to help artists get money they otherwise might not have access to, especially going into it full time, like us, and needing funding for marketing, recording, mastering and all that,” said Loeb.

The duo is getting set to launch their biggest-yet tour of Canada’s western coast, and has been making waves outside of Canada too, being booked to play two years in a row at the Bamboo Bass Festival

liams tribute to Mermaid Theatre in Windsor Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

This not-to-be-missed show recently amazed concert-goers in Annapolis Royal and is touring Atlantic Canada. Cook embodies Williams in this concert in two acts and promises to be at once nostalgic and inspirational.

Mixing classic country music with modern satire, Cook forges a sound between contemporary folk and dyed-in-the wool country. With nuances of pop and western swing, Ryan’s songbook reminiscences of the early hillbilly and folk pioneers but stays very much in the current landscape.

On stage Ryan has toured as a solo performer opening for artists like Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash, & Travis Tritt, receiving over 20 award nominations in Canada including three Album of the Year awards. His acoustic live show combines thumb-picking guitar styles, original folk country ballads and vintage music from the 1940s and 1950s.
