A new season offers many opportunit­ies

A new 4-H year is well underway at the Western Kings 4-H Club.

Vice-president Thomas Clarke opened a recent meeting with the pledge and welcomed new members. One of the first reports concerned the County Giant Rutabaga competitio­n. Congratula­tions to Thalia Tobin, who had the senior reserve champion rutabaga, and to An- drew Murray, who placed first in the junior category and went on to have the champion provincial rutabaga.

The successful Nova Scotia 4-H show in Bridgewate­r was discussed. Kings County placed third in the province. Our members can be proud of their accomplish­ments in lifeskills, livestock and public speaking competitio­ns.

The County Awards Night was held recently beginning with a potluck supper. A special shout out to Sydney Milne, Heidi Daniels Memorial Spirit Award winner; Mackenzie West, the recipient of the Jean Ann Mitchell Most Improved Dairy Award; Jacob Hirtle for the Jean Ann Mitchell Most Improved Horse Member; and Tobin for Top Club Reporter. Three clubs were recognized for special community service: Eastern Kings, Har- mony-Nicholsvil­le and Western Kings.

November is 4-H month. Members delivered treats to AVR/ Magic 94.9 in celebratio­n of Internatio­nal 4-H Day on Nov. 7. They also will be bringing food bank donations to the Nov. 20 meeting.

Another special activity this month is the Valley Hospice Christmas Gala on Nov. 23 at the Louis Millett Centre. Members will be serving and helping clean up at the event.

Upcoming club fundraiser­s were discussed. There will be a cheese fundraiser and a wreath sale in time for the Christmas season. Wreath orders can be brought to the Nov. 20 meeting which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Somerset School. New members and leaders are welcome.
