How Middleton Curling Club gets ready for the holidays

- Karen Sotvedt is a member of the Middleton Curling Club.

2018 is winding down at Middleton Curling Club, and you may be asking yourself: what does a curler do to ring out the old year and ring in the new?

As luck would have it, we have the answer in a “countdown” of the ways right here!

5. Host a party:

Anyone who entered the curling club last Sunday would have found a festive scene of babies and mothers, toddlers in bike helmets, and - of course - curlers. The curling club does not just welcome those playing in a league, and a friends-and-family gathering such as this could be host to a new generation of curlers.

4. Go curling:

The league play for 2018 finishes this week, when the leagues will all have their final games, and some (like the Western Draw and Afternoon leagues) will have a holiday potluck. Onlookers are welcome as always - and the club will welcome familiar faces and some new ones when play begins again in the first full week of January.

3. Eat a big breakfast:

No one likes a big breakfast more than a curler - except maybe their family and friends. Last Saturday saw MCC’s December breakfast welcome the community in style. In the meantime, “custom-made” toast and mounds of bacon will greet the fans of this breakfast when January rolls around.

2. Prep for the January thaw: While many curlers take this time of year to relax and rejuvenate, others are busily preparing themselves to organize or curl in Middleton’s first bonspiel of the New Year. Stay tuned for more information as we draw closer to the January Thaw Mixed Bonspiel that brings us all the warmth of comradery, competition, and the hope of mild weather in the midst of our coldest season.

1. Send tidings of great joy: And, of course, no curling story would be complete without the spirit of curlers. With a bar packed with patrons, antlers galore, and hugs all around, Middleton curlers are best at saying to each other - and everyone out there - have the happiest of holidays and a sociable New Year!
