Wild­cats sign 2018 QMJHL first rounder

Val­ley ac­quires rights to Alex Drover from Saint John Sea Dogs

The Val­ley Wild­cats have signed free-agent for­ward Alex Drover, whose Que­bec Ma­jor Ju­nior Hockey League rights are owned by the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The 16- year- old Port aux Basques, N.L. na­tive was drafted by the Cape Bre­ton Scream­ing Ea­gles 10th over­all in the 2018 QMJHL en­try draft last June and was dealt to the Sea Dogs on Dec. 16. The cen­tre­man played in 26 games for Cape Bre­ton, tal­ly­ing three goals and eight

as­sists and has reg­is­tered a goal in three games with Saint John.

He spent the 2017-18 sea­son with the Hal­i­fax Mc­Don­ald’s of the NSMMHL, where he col­lected 27 goals and 30 as­sists, earn­ing rookie of the year hon­ours.

Drover is ex­pected to join the Mar­itime Hockey League’s Wild- cats for games on Jan. 11 and 12.

“We’ve very happy to work out a deal with Saint John to ac­quire Alex’s Mar­itime league rights and pro­vide him the ice time he needs to de­velop,” said Wild­cats gen­eral man­ager and coach Nick Gree­nough. “It’s not ev­ery day you’re able to add a first-rounder from the Q and we ex­pect Alex will pro­vide some much-needed scor­ing punch.”
