Axewomen improve to 6-2 with important win over Tigers

The Acadia Axewomen improved to 6- 2 and captured a four- point game win against the visiting Dalhousie Tigers 84- 51 last Saturday night at the Stu Aberdeen Court in Wolfville.

The Axewomen had a dominating first quarter over a Dalhousie team that could not connect. Acadia rallied together 23 points while the Tigers only posted only nine.

Acadia shot well in the first, making 10 of their 23 ( 43.5 per cent) attempts from the field. Haley McDonald led all players with points.

The Axewomen continued to lead throughout the second quarter, outshootin­g the Tigers from the field and from three. Acadia also capitalize­d off Dalhousie’s numerous turnovers.

The Axewomen held a 44- 26 advantage into the intermissi­on. McDonald finished the half with 10 points to lead all players.

Acadia opened the third quarter with three straight three- pointers and incredible defensive play. With a 60- 30 Acadia lead, it became clear Dalhousie would not be coming back in this game. The Axewomen held a 69- 32 lead after three quarters.

Robertha Charles led the Tigers after 30 minutes with 12 points, three rebounds, and one assist. She would finish the game with 16 points and be named her team’s Player of the Game. Off the bench, Emily Holt added 10 points and five rebounds.

Acadia put the game away in the fourth quarter, tallying a final score of 84- 51 for the win.

Jayda Veinot finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Her impressive allaround performanc­e had her recognized as Acadia’s Subway Player of the Game. Haley McDonald added a game high 17 points.

The Axewomen shot an exceptiona­l 35/ 80 from the field and 9/ 22 from three on the game, while the Tigers fell short with a 25.4 per cent field goal percentage.

Axemen snap losing streak with upset win over Dalhousie

The Acadia Axemen posted a comeback win on Saturday night, grabbing an important four- point game from the Dalhousie Tigers and improving to 2- 6.

After trailing the Tigers 16- 5 to start the first frame, the Axemen worked hard to get back into the game before the quarter ended. Acadia went on an eight- point run to close the quarter and bring Acadia to within three points in a 16- 13 Tigers advantage.

Ben Miller of the Axemen shot 3/ 4 from behind the arch in the first, contributi­ng nine of his team’s 13 points, while Tiger Alex Carson of the netted 10 of his team’s first 16 points.

Acadia worked hard to keep up with the Tigers in the second, though they would fall back a few points. At the half, the Tigers would hold a 32- 25 lead over the host Axemen. Carson added two points in the second to lead all players with 12 points.

The game remained close throughout the third quarter, and the Axemen battled hard to ensure the lead would not grow.

With one second remaining on the clock in the third quarter, Trevon Grant made a threepoint shot to give Acadia their first lead of the game, bringing the home crowd to their feet. The Axemen went into the intermissi­on ahead 52- 51.

With four minutes left in the game, Acadia had built themselves a seven- point lead. The Axemen would hold onto the lead for the 75- 69 victory.

Axeman Jacques Lukusa went 17- 2- 3 on the night and made nine of his 11 attempted freethrows. Lukusa’s performanc­e earned him the Subway Player of the Game award.

Jayda Veinot finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Her impressive all-around performanc­e had her recognized as Acadia’s Subway Player of the Game. Haley McDonald added a game high 17 points.

Ben Miller and Trevon Grant added 15 and 13 points, respective­ly, while new teammate Teritayo Shittu had seven points including a timely three point basket at the 5: 10 mark to give Acadia a 62- 56 lead. Shittu, a transfer from StFX, played in his first game as an Axeman.

Xavier Ochu of the Tigers had a fantastic game, shooting 4/ 8 from three and totalling a game- high 21 points. Ochu was named his team’s player of the game.

The Axemen and Axewomen host Memorial University for two games this weekend, with the first on Saturday at 1 p. m. ( women) and 3 p. m. ( men). It’s U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure Day on Saturday afternoon where the Axewomen raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research.
