The Town of Kentville has prepared recreational programs for youth ages 12-15 as the town looks to offer a healthy and active summer.

In a July 5 Facebook post, Kentville officials announced that registration for youth specialty programs is now open.

The Kentville Recreation team prepared five programs that will start on July 28 and continue until Aug. 27, giving youth opportunities to sharpen their sports, science, and art skills.

Recreation officials said from July 28-30, youth can spend time in Kentville’s mountain bike park, the Gorge, coached by individuals from Bicycle Nova Scotia. The course is aimed at beginner bikers and requires participants to have a mountain bike.

The camping program, Into the Wild, will be held Aug. 3-6, and will teach participants effective camping techniques. Campers can learn knot tying, shelter building, cooking over a fire, navigation, plant identification and outdoor leadership.

For those interested in an in-depth dive into science, math, technologies and arts, Kentville Recreation prepared a S.T.E.A.M. program. Organizers said the program will challenge participants to think outside the box and work on innovative projects Aug. 9-13.

Youth looking to play a variety of sports can join the multi-sport program from Aug.16 -20, where campers will learn traditional and nontraditional sports regardless of their skill level.

For art-inclined youth, the art and activism program will offer opportunities to explore various art forms that can be used as a medium to express what they are passionate about. This program will run Aug. 23-27.
