Dixon commits to Axewomen
Taya Dixon found the right fit to pursue her university education while continuing to grow as a basketball player in Wolfville.
The Grade 12 student at Citadel High School in Halifax will join the Acadia Axewomen for the 2022-23 Atlantic University Sport season.
“I’ve always wanted to play basketball at the U Sports level and Acadia’s academics as well as their team dynamic and focus on player development made them my top choice,” said Dixon. “I’m looking forward to starting this new chapter and joining the Axewomen.”
Acadia head coach Len Harvey said he is thrilled to have the guard joining the Axewomen.
“I think Taya is going to be a fantastic U Sports player. She’s incredibly explosive and has worked hard on her game over the last number of years. She’s going to fit our style of play well, and I also see her as being someone who could become an exceptional perimeter defender in our conference,” said Harvey.
“The biggest thing that stands out with Taya is her competitive level on every play and her desire to win. That incredible attitude is the primary reason we worked so hard to recruit her, and we’re really glad she chose to come play with us here at Acadia.”
Dixon, an active community member and accomplished student who will pursue a bachelor of science at Acadia, has been a member of the Nova Scotia provincial teams since 2018. She participated in the 2019 national championship, where she was the team captain for the sixthplace Nova Scotia squad.
With the Citadel Phoenix, Dixon won silver medals at regional and provincial championships in Grade 10 and finished second in the Capital Region in Grade 11 when provincials were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m really looking forward to bonding with my new teammates and to starting my university basketball career,” Dixon said. “I’m also very excited to learn from Len, such a highly regarded coach.”
