Adam recognized on under-18 women’s team
Nova Scotians Avi Adam and Lucy Phillips were recently recognized by Hockey Canada as members of the Canadian national women’s under-18 team.
Adam (Wolfville) was among the 13 forwards to be selected while Phillips (Upper Tantallon) was one of the three goaltenders. Adam plays for Etobicoke in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association's (OWHA) under-22 elite league while Phillips is a member of the Halifax Western Capitals of the Maritime Major Female Under-18 Hockey League.
The Canadian team was to compete at the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) under-18 women’s championship in Sweden, but the tournament was cancelled for the second consecutive year by the IIHF due to the ongoing uncertainty and changing landscape of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to cancel the tournament sparked outrage among hockey fans as the world junior men's tournament was permitted to go ahead. The junior men's event was subsequently cancelled as COVID-19 numbers rose among players in the tournament being held in Alberta.
“Our disappointment of not competing in the championship this month does not overshadow the dedication and hard work our athletes and staff put in to be ready to compete,” said Gina Kingsbury, director of hockey operations said in a news release. “I am extremely proud of this group. It is crucial for the development of these athletes, as well as the growth of the women’s game, to be able to hold this tournament, and we remain hopeful there is an opportunity for them to showcase their talents and represent Canada on the world stage in the near future.”
