CEC player ‘a great fit’ with Acadia
Hard work has paid off for Jewel Woolfitt.
The Grade 12 student at Cobequid Educational Centre (CEC) in Truro will study business at Acadia University and play for the Axewomen’s basketball team. The five-foot-eight shooting guard is from Brookfield.
“Acadia gave me the best overall feeling. From basketball to academics, I think it will be a great fit for me,” she said. “Getting the opportunity to play at a high level in such a great community of people is what I am most excited about.”
Woolfitt is the second player the Axewomen have announced as part of their recruiting class for the 202223 Atlantic University Sport season. She joins Citadel Phoenix guard Taya Dixon.
Axewomen head coach
Len Harvey said Woolfitt has been on their radar for a while.
“She's quietly gone about her business, working her tail off to develop as one of the top players in (Nova Scotia) and has established herself as a leader on one of the best high school teams in the province,” he said.
“We really like her competitive spirit, high basketball IQ, and that she is emotionally consistent on the floor, which is a rare quality to find these days.
I’m excited to coach Jewel here at Acadia, it’s corny to say, but we think we got a ‘jewel’ of a recruit with her commitment to the team.”
Woolfitt is a winner of the CEC’s basketball team’s 3D Award, presented annually to a player for their determination, dedication and desire. Woolfitt's Cougars captured tournament wins at the Eastern Canadian Classic Tournament and the Armbrae Winter Classic this season before School Sport Nova Scotia play was paused due to COVID-19 health restrictions.
Wolfitt also played club ball with the CBA Tigers and has played three seasons with the provincial program. She is also in the mix for this summer’s Canada Games in the Niagara region of Ontario.
