New facility moves ahead with architects hired
The Atalanta Hospice Society has retained Jost+Architects of Annapolis Royal to design the Fundy Hospice, a new residential-style hospice to serve the residents of Annapolis and Digby municipalities and surrounding areas.
The hospice will be located on 6.63 acres in Cornwallis Park on property donated by the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre. It will become the first such facility in southwest Nova Scotia when it begins operation in 2025. It will be the fourth residential hospice within the province.
Jost plans to have a proposed site plan and conceptual design ready for review in the spring.
“We have received a very positive response to our first capital campaign fundraiser,” said society president David Cvet. “We are excited to have Jost+Architects working with us on design of the Fundy Hospice."
The success of the Quest for Fundy Hospice's Knight Ride at Cornwallis Park in September helped to provide funding for the first phase of the design project. The fiveday fundraiser raised more than $17,000 as the kickoff to the capital campaign to raise $3.5 million for construction.
The Fundy Hospice has been receiving donations from local businesses, governments and residents.
These include a donation of $2,000 from the municipality of Digby and a $5,700 grant from the Annapolis West Health Foundation as part of the Knight Ride.
Casa Nova Fine Beverages pledged to donate $1 for every bottle of its Wild Blueberry Wine sold at its Bear River store, farmer’s markets, and special event shows in the last four months of 2021. The Annapolis Basin Conference Centre Board donated $4,000 in remembrance of former board member H. Neil Nichols, who was a founding director of the Atalanta Hospice
Society and a well-known advocate for construction of the hospice.
“We think this excitement will spread exponentially when we are able to share a detailed site plan and building design with the community," Cvet said. "There is no question that the residents of our province will benefit from an expansion of hospice services.”
