The Acadia Axewomen are Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) champs.

The Axemen defeated the host Holland College Hurricanes 4-1 in the final March 6 in Montague, P.E.I., to win the title of the three-team circuit. Acadia went 3-0 at the tournament, allowing only one goal.

“It was a phenomenal team effort that led us to success,” said Axewomen captain Andrea Pyke. “The commitment from our players and coaches has helped us reach our goals for the season. It is great to see our team come together and work so hard. Winning the championship showed how far the team has come in the past few years and I am looking forward to seeing what comes in the future.”

Brenna Verran scored twice in the championship game with singles going to Grace Smith, and Chantelle Richard.

Paige Deighan replied for the Hurricanes.

Avary Miller was the winning goalie for Acadia, which held 1-0 and 3-0 period leads en route to the title.

“It was a memorable and exciting moment for me to win the ACHA championship in my final year on the team,” Pyke said. “I’ve been playing with some of these players (Brooke Switzer, Abby Legere and Allie Norris) for a few years, so it was nice to finally win with them by my side and have rookies experience the moment too.”
