Axewomen, Axemen in homestretch as playoffs approach

Haley McDonald had 32 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Axewomen to a 92-72 victory. Sarah Delorey had 17 points and 15 rebounds while Elizabeth Iseyemi contributed 14 points, 10 boards, three assists, three steals and a block. Former Axewomen Jayda Veinot, a Port Williams native, had 15 points and 10 boards for the Reds. Acadia, which held 2718, 42-31 and 73-57 quarter leads, improved to a conferenceleading 12-3 while UNB is 9-7. It was Acadia’s second win of the week after defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 93-60 Jan. 27 in Wolfville. Delorey had a game-high 23 points in the win while McDonald had 19 points and nine assists. Acadia held 24-11, 51-30 and 73-44 quarter leads. The Tigers are 1-15.

Groulx during Atlantic University Sport (AUS) hockey action Jan. 28 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Nagy scored the winner in a 3-2 victory. Nick Deakin-Poot and Adam McMaster also scored in the victory while Deakin-Poot and Nagy each had an assist. T.J. Shea scored both goals for the home side. Zachary Paputsakis made 32 saves for his first AUS win while Lucas Fitzpatrick stopped 22 shots in the loss. The game was tied 2-2 after the first period while Acadia took a 3-2 lead to the third. Acadia improved to 9-14-2-1 while UPEI dropped to 15-9-1-1. Acadia lost 4-1 on home ice to Saint Mary’s on Jan. 25. Corson Hopwo had the lone goal for the Axemen with McMaster picking up an assist and Conor McCollum stopping 32 shots.
