SENIORS’ NIGHT

-

The Acadia Axewomen celebrated their seniors after the Feb. 11 contest. Head coach Len Harvey noted each of the four athletes have been an academic all-Canadian each season at Acadia and have played on championship Sunday each year in Halifax. Here’s some of what he said about each player.

Sophie Atkinson, Yarmouth

“Small towns love to root for blue-collar people and Sophie put her hard hat and work boots on every single time she stepped foot on this floor for practices or games. She endeared herself to her teammates, coaches and Axewomen fans with her relentlessness, her toughness and the fact she gave her all for the team. Soph’s competitive spirit and humility is something every young athlete in this gym should try to emulate. Soph is the teammate that everyone wants on their team and no one wants to play against.”

Sandy Saunders, Woodstock, N.B.

“The sharpshooter from New Brunswick has become a stalwart for our team the past two seasons. One of the best shooters in the entire country with the silky-smooth stroke that has all of you in this gym standing up as soon as she catches it. She is someone who quietly goes about her job without any fanfare. … Sandy has been one of our top performers, a dedicated volunteer, a leader for our team and hit one of the loudest shots in Axewomen history in the AUS final last season that turned the tides for our comeback win.”

Olivia Moller, Bedford

“Affectionately referred to as the Microwave, Liv can come into any game and heat up in an instant. She’s changed so many important games during her career, coming in and hitting big shot after big shot. She’s a vocal leader, she’s brought positive energy in practices and games throughout her entire career. She’s been a tireless volunteer here at Acadia and an exceptional student and an incredible teammate and athlete for our team.”

Haley McDonald, Port Williams

“My second wish, and I know she shares this one too, is that there is a young girl in this crowd right now that feels the same way about her as she did about Lindsay Harris and Stef Chapman and that sees being from, and playing in, a small town can be one of the biggest blessings and advantages in your whole life.”
