Western Kings 4-H Club becomes pen pals with Fredericton senior
My name is Jack VanderHeide and I am the club reporter for the Western Kings 4-H Club. I am 14 years old and have been in 4-H for seven years.
I started in 4-H by doing the Exploring 4-H project and have also done tractor, foods and dairy.
One of my favourite 4-H activities is woodsmen. Last year I was able to join the senior woodsmen team as a spare and our team won the provincial competition.
The 4-H year has started and we have already done a lot and are planning for a busy year ahead.
In December, we held our annual holiday party where we played games, had a pizza party and presented certificates for successful project completion.
Congratulations to our top junior member Bailey Justason and to our champion senior member Leah Newcombe.
We also wrote cards to residents of Wauklehegan Manor, a seniors care home in Fredericton. The residents really liked receiving the cards and we now have a pen pal named Helen, who is 88 years old, who lives at the manor. She sent us some pictures of her as a child and as a participant in some of the activities they do at Wauklehegan Manor. She really likes fourwheelers, hunting and fishing and enjoys sports and is a huge Elvis fan. Our members will take turns writing to Helen and hope that she enjoys our letters.
During the month of March you may notice 4-H’ers selling Laura Secord chocolate bars. This is our provincial fundraiser. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, here’s a way to also support your local 4-H member.
Club members have been working on speeches and demonstrations to complete their public speaking for the year. We are selecting representatives for the Kings County Rally, which is taking place at Evangeline Middle School on April 1.
The 100th anniversary of
4-H in Nova Scotia continues to be celebrated. Our club is celebrating by sharing acts of kindness by our members and are keeping a tally to collect 100 Acts of Kindness. Anniversary cookbooks were also created by Kings County 4-H and will be for sale at events throughout the year as well as from our club. The recipes in the book were submitted by members, leaders and special supporters of 4-H.
There will also be a banquet held in Truro during the provincial 4-H rally on May 6 to celebrate as a province.
I look forward to sharing more about our 4-H club activities and encourage everyone to check out 4-H activities throughout the year.
