RUSSIAN AGGRESSION MUST BE CONDEMNED

- Jacek Prosniewski, Lawrencetown, Halifax County

I am amazed by Scott Taylor’s total lack of basic understanding of the geopolitical situation in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (U.S. hunter-killer drone reaps Russian response, March 21 in The Chronicle Herald).

I strongly suggest he educate himself in European history before warning the rest of the world against provoking Russia.

History is full of countless examples of Russian imperialism and total disrespect for neighbouring countries. Russia has no business telling other countries what to do and who to align with.

As a person who grew up in a country under strong Soviet influence, I can assure you that the so-called “friendly presence” of the Russian army in eastern Europe will never be forgotten.

Ukraine chose its own future and its desire to join NATO does not require Vladimir Putin’s approval. Anybody thinking otherwise must be simply ignorant or extremely naïve.

The fact that some individuals in Europe are hesitant to condemn Russian aggression has more to do with regular deposits from Gazprom’s payroll department than with common sense.

Russia is committing crimes against humanity in Ukraine every day and regularly showers Ukrainian cities with drones without worrying about provoking NATO. Hence, I find Taylor’s suggestion that we dare not provoke Putin with drones to be completely inappropriate.

Unless you had Russia as a neighbour for 1,000 years, it is hard to comprehend the scale of Russian imperialistic ambitions. I encourage Taylor to do his own research and look at the bigger picture. There is a lot to read.

Obviously, Putin’s war in Ukraine is not going according to his plan, however, it is far from over.

Strong, united and unlimited NATO support for Ukraine under U.S. leadership is the only solution to this war, including employing new technology and whatever tools are required to achieve this goal. This is the only way to stop other potential conflicts arising from Russia’s desire to restore the Soviet Union along with its sphere of influence.
