Firefighters battle woods fire in Halls Harbour
Firefighters from three Kings County fire departments were called to a woods fire along the shore of the Bay of Fundy May 8.
Halls Harbour firefighters received the call at about 1 p.m. for the fire on Simpson Road, behind a new home being constructed. Gusty winds spread the fire among brush and fallen softwoods trees for about a quarter hectare (half an acre) before firefighters stopped its progress.
The home being built was not in the fire’s path.
A Department of Natural Resources and Renewables crew was also called to the scene.
The cause of the fire was under investigation at press time.
Kings County's woodlands have been getting dryer during the past week and the danger index that predicts fire spread has been increasing. the Fire Weather Index Forecast is updated twice daily, at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
As of May 9, there had been 122 wildfires in the province this year. They have burned 250 hectares. shopping or seasonal residents. The team would like input from a crosssection of the area.
“It’s important to have spaces that they want to interact with,” she said.
The team would also like to see other community groups provide input as they work to revitalize the area.
“We don’t see this as a one-off series of projects,” MacDonald said.
“There’s other things that we could address and tackle in future years, so this is just the place to start,” she added. “And that’s why we want everybody to come out and join in with us.”
MacDonald said the idea is for some of the work to begin later this month and continue into the fall.
“We’re very much working together to bring this all about to do something great for our community,” MacDonald said. “We can do so much more when we work together.”
