Man charged following standoff

- SALTWIRE

A 25-year-old man from the Annapolis Valley is facing more charges after being arrested on outstanding charges May 12 following a standoff with police in North Kentville.

Kyle Trahan has been charged with two counts each of assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon and uttering threats as well as one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was remanded into custody and had a bail hearing set for May 15.

Around 12:30 p.m. on May 12, two members of the Kings District Street Crime Enforcement Unit attempted to arrest Trahan for outstanding charges, including aggravated assault and assault on a police officer.

“When officers approached the man, he got into a vehicle and a struggle ensued,” an RCMP news release issued May 14 said. “One officer deployed a conducted energy weapon unsuccessfully. The suspect then sprayed a large quantity of bear spray at the officers, hitting both, and fled into a nearby residence.”

More officers arrived and contained the man inside the home on Stephen Court.

“While throwing items at officers through the window, the man was seen brandishing a large knife,” the release said.

Several police cars vehicles with sirens blaring descended on Stephen Court over the lunch hour, said a neighbour on Governor Court, which runs parallel to Stephen Court.

“There was quite the ruckus,” he told The Chronicle Herald.

Two women parked in a truck nearby said they were heading to Stephen Court to visit a friend but found the road blocked by police and ambulance at the intersection of Governor and Stephen courts, and Governor

Court and Rosedale Avenue. They called the friend, but he was at work.

Police officers could be seen behind a vehicle that was parked on the connecting street where it meets Stephen Court. Several other police vehicles could be seen on the street.

Another ambulance was also said to be on Stephen Court.

Police said on social media there was no immediate threat to anyone outside the home and asked people to avoid the

area.

The Nova Scotia RCMP’s Emergency Response Team attended the scene, along with Police Dog Services. The Mounties said multiple response tactics, including the use of an RCMP negotiator, were employed. Around 5:15 p.m., the subject exited the residence and surrendered. The release said he was taken to hospital for the treatment of minor self-inflicted injuries.
