Toronto is full of out­stand­ing women who are blaz­ing new trails. Here are a few more.

JES­SICA PLATT

Toronto Furies player Jes­sica Platt be­came the first openly trans­gen­der woman to play in the Cana­dian Women’s Hockey League in Jan­uary of this year. She hopes to help other trans­gen­der ath­letes feel com­fort­able with who they are.

SAADIA MUZAFFAR

Saadia Muzaffar is a tech en­tre­pre­neur and ad­vo­cate for the pros­per­ity of women in STEM ar­eas. She is the founder of TechGirls Canada and an am­bas­sador for GEM, a men­tor­ship pro­gram for high school girls fac­ing so­cio-eco­nomic bar­ri­ers.

KARENA EVANS

When Drake dropped the video for “God’s Plan,” his mu­sic video di­rec­tor Karena Evans was pushed into the spot­light. She has since di­rected his videos for “Nice for What,” “I’m Up­set” and “In My Feel­ings,” and she’s not slow­ing down.

HAY­LEY WICKENHEISER

One of Canada’s most cel­e­brated hockey play­ers, Hay­ley Wickenheiser is break­ing down bar­ri­ers on and off the ice. Af­ter re­tir­ing as a player last year, she was named as­sis­tant di­rec­tor of player devel­op­ment for the Leafs in Au­gust.

OSRA LINDO

At age 79, Osra Lindo is show­ing ev­ery­one that it’s never too late to pur­sue fur­ther ed­u­ca­tion. The grand­mother grad­u­ated from York Uni­ver­sity this year with a de­gree in gen­der, sex­u­al­ity and women’s stud­ies af­ter 52 years in the work­force.

LES­LEY HAMP­TON

Toronto-based First Na­tion fash­ion de­signer Les­ley Hamp­ton is known for pro­mot­ing in­clu­siv­ity and body di­ver­sity in her col­lec­tions. In an in­dus­try that so of­ten fo­cuses on un­re­al­is­tic beauty stan­dards, Hamp­ton is chang­ing the game.

WEYNI MENGESHA

Weyni Mengesha, the Dora Award–win­ning di­rec­tor of Kim’s Con­ve­nience and Da Kink in My Hair, was named Soulpep­per’s new artis­tic di­rec­tor in Oc­to­ber. She’ll be com­ing home to T.O. from L.A. to start her new role this Jan­uary.
