Among the various innovations explored by Azure in our annual Trends issue in October, the increasing integration of built forms with natural elements (“Healthy Mergers,” page 066) generated the most response from the architects and designers who read about it. One was none other than the acclaimed urban designer and author Ken Greenberg, who agreed that the line between architecture and landscape is steadily eroding. “Our conception of space,” he wrote, “is becoming more fluid and interpenetrating. In that respect, the fusion of landscape and building, of indoor and outdoor, is a powerful way of reconsidering the places we inhabit.” A few weeks later, Greenberg was able to expound further on the subject when he joined a distinguished panel of fellow design professionals for an Azure Talk in Toronto on fostering inclusive cities. The need for accessible public spaces that function as extensions of the buildings around them was a common refrain. Look out for more Azure Talks throughout the year.
