The PRINCESS AND THE PIE

- By Sam Verlinden, Age 16 Illustrated by Christy Schollen

nce upon a time, there was a faraway land with a beautiful princess. Her kingdom was small but mighty, with beautiful scenery all around. Life was just great for everyone.

The princess lived a lavish life. She got to do many things that other youth would only dream about. She was generally happy, until one day her father introduced her to her supposedly new fiancp.

“Hello, my name is Philip. Prince of Galivia.” “Hi, I’m Lilliana, but you can call me Lilly.”

Her father left them to talk. It was kind of awkward at first. They didn’t know what to talk about, and then they started a conversation on just plain old regular stuff. After the prince was called away on important business, Lilliana took her chance to tell her parents that she couldn’t marry him because she knew the prince's reputation and didn't like what he stood for.

Her father started pleading with her, “Please Lilly, we need the alliance with Galivia. They help us in ways you can't even begin to understand.” “Okay, I’ll try,” she said.

She left her parents and went to her room to read. Once she settled into her book, she saw her mother was waiting in the doorway.

“Honey, can I talk to you about Prince Philip?” “Okay. Mom, you must know that I really don’t like him and shouldn't marry him. He is arrogant and selfish. He wouldn't stop talking about himself, and I hardly got a word in.”

“Honey, I understand, and I trust your judgement. If you really don't feel you can marry him, that’s fine. We just want you to follow your heart. ou always try to please us, and we love you for it. This can be your decision.” “Thank you, Mom. I love you.”

Her mom left her to finish reading. Lilliana decided to give Philip another chance. That night they met up for dinner in the garden courtyard. She could tell he was giving his best effort to be sweet.

Once they sat down, though, he started to get upset with her for the silliest reasons. He brought up that she wasn’t as proper as the other princesses when she started using the wrong fork. His anger built up, and it began to scare her. They sat silently for the rest of the night.

When they were finished and leaving the courtyard, he blurted out, “No wonder your parents set us up. No one would want you otherwise.”

“ ou have no right to talk to me like that. I don’t care about which fork to use. I’m only doing this for my parents. But if you're going to be a jerk, you can go home!” She ran down a garden path and out of his sight.

She started thinking about what to do. She didn't want to marry the prince. But at the same time, she didn't want to disappoint her parents.

She decided to take a walk through the village. It was quaint, peaceful, and just the perfect place to wander around and think. It was late evening, and shops were closing up for the day. She decided to pop into a pie shop to get some leftover pie because she was still kind of hungry. Once she got inside, she was flooded with warmth and the smell of freshbaked pies.

A young man came out to greet her,

“Hey, what can I get you?” he asked.

“Oh, um, do you have a slice of pie leftover for the day?” she said.

“Oh, yeah, actually we do. 'o I know you from somewhere?”

“Well, I don’t think so. My name is Penelope,” she said, changing her name. She didn't want to disclose her identity as the princess.

“Oh, okay. I’m Andrew, and this is my grandma’s and my pie shop.”

“I don’t get out much, so I finally came to check out the town square.”

Once they started talking, they couldn't stop. They talked for hours. They noticed it was very late, and Andrew offered her to stay in the guest room. She decided to take him up on it and didn't care anymore if she got in trouble.

In the morning, she woke up to an empty house. She started to get worried. She looked

around for a glass of water and found a note on the table from Andrew telling her he was at the pie shop. She freshened up and went to meet him.

Once she got there, she could tell it was very busy and decided to help. The princess had enjoyed baking at the castle, so she knew what to do. She started taking people's requests and packing up the pies so that Andrew could check them out at the counter. After about an hour, it finally slowed down,

“How did you know how to do all of that?” “Oh, well, I really like to bake, so I know all of the types of pies and pastries there are. I hope you didn’t mind.”

“Not at all. It’s nice having someone help us.” Lilly spent the rest of the day at the pie shop and the next week. Andrew enjoyed her company but felt he needed to ask her. “Why are you here? I mean, I love spending time with you, and I really appreciate your help, but where did you come from? Is no one wondering where you are?”

She was going to tell him when she heard a voice from outside the shop yelling her name. It sounded like Phillip. Sure enough, when she came outside, he was on his horse.

“How dare you leave without my permission. ou didn't leave a note or anything. our parents have moved up the wedding, and it’s tomorrow! I’ve spent the last five days looking for you just to find you with some silly pie boy.”

Lilliana started to cry quietly. Andrew didn't know what to do. He tried to tell the prince to leave her alone, but the words didn't come. Lilliana whispered she was sorry and hopped on the back of the horse. And just like that, she was gone.

“How dare you leave without my permission!”

Andrew spent the rest of the day sulking. At the end of the night, his grandmother walked in. “Why did the girl leave?”

“She is getting married. She is the princess.” “Well, do you love this girl?”

“I don't know, but she is a really good friend.” “Son, let me tell you something. )riends are always there for you. They pick you up when you are down and help you when you are struggling. If you want to continue to be her friend, you have to make an effort just as much as she does.” “Okay, what should I do?”

“Go to the castle and talk to her.” Andrew decided that his grandmother was right. He started heading out of the house when he saw the princess. She had come back.

“My name is actually Lilliana. I told Phillip I couldn’t marry him because he is not a good person and I know that I wouldn't be happy. I finally stood up for myself and did something I wanted to. ou gave me the strength to do it. (verything else I told you is true. I know that you probably can’t trust me now, and that’s okay. But I wanted to tell you.”

After she finished, Andrew stood there dumbfounded. He decided to take a chance and live with Princess Lilliana in the castle. The king offered him the position to be the palace's personal pie chef! b '
