It's back down­town for Cum­ber­birch, who squeezes in his own work­out. “I al­low two hours for that, be­cause there's about 15 min­utes where you un­wind and get ready for your work­out, and then you have to shower and change,” he says. Then he and his two Yard Ath­let­ics staffers kick off the night shift, wel­com­ing clients ev­ery hour from 5 to 8. It's tough work, but Cumby, as many of his trainees call him, is up for it.

“We're not go­ing to come in there and pet you and hold your hand; it's not the most glam­orous lo­ca­tion, and we don't have scented tow­els,” he says. “It gets a lit­tle loud in there, and it's in­tense, and there's a good en­ergy. I think cre­at­ing that cul­ture and that en­ergy is huge for the brand.”
