For­tu­nately, there are safe al­ter­na­tives.

1. Use a cedar scraper to re­move charred food from the grates.

2. Ball up alu­minum foil and use it to scrub the still-warm grates, us­ing heat-proof gloves to pro­tect your hands.

3. Slice an onion in half, stick a grilling fork in the round side and rub the cut side over the hot grates.
