Do I smell different now?

It might have something to do with your microbiome.

- —Rebecca Gao

Raise your hand if working from home is making you smell… different. Not good, not bad—just different. While most of the evidence is anecdotal, it’s possible that this change in scent is thanks to your microbiome. Our skin is teeming with microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, and we’re used to exchanging these micro-organisms with other people at work and school, in social settings and on transit. Since we started keeping six feet apart from the rest of the world, the diversity of microbes we’re encountering has gone down dramatically. So if you’re smelling a little off lately, it might be because your body is missing out on those interesting microbes from strangers.
