What I Wear to Work: For musician Caleb Groh, “true style is about eliminating excess”
24, musician and artist, Nashville
What do you do? I’m a folk musician and felt artist. Half the time I’m playing shows, creating albums, and going on tour, and I make animal sculptures through a technique called needle felting.
Oh, wow, I’ve never heard of that. It started because I wanted to create characters for this stopmotion film I was doing, but then I got into it. As far as I know, I’m the only needle felter by occupation.
How would you describe your style? I’d say that it’s pretty effortless. True style is about eliminating excess. It’s about dressing mostly for yourself and not anyone else.
Is that a leopardprint shirt? Yeah! I got it from a vintage boutique called Local Honey. It’s actually a woman’s shirt.
These are socks you would show off. They were an impulse purchase, but I wear them all the time. I like that they’re kind of serious, but if you look closely, there’s palm trees all over.
Was it on a female mannequin? No, it was on an androgynous one. I think it was headless.
Are your pants gold? No. I spent a good time looking for the perfect caramel- colored pants, and when I saw these, it was like I’d finally found exactly what I was looking for.
Did they come rolled up like that? They didn’t. I’ll roll them up once or twice depending on how much sock I want to show off.
