THE TRANS­PORTA­TION SE­CU­RITY AD­MIN­IS­TRA­TION (TSA) is rolling out new air­port scan­ners with com­puted to­mog­ra­phy tech­nol­ogy to re­duce the num­ber of bag checks for pas­sen­gers. In 2017 the agency be­gan test­ing the new CT scan­ner at Phoenix Sky Har­bor In­ter­na­tional Air­port and Bos­ton’s Lo­gan In­ter­na­tional Air­port. Re­cently, an ad­di­tional scan­ner was em­ployed at JFK in New York.

The agency plans to have an ad­di­tional 40 scan­ners in place by the end of the 2018. By 2019 fis­cal year, over 145 units will be in air­ports across the coun­try. Among the air­ports sched­uled to in­stall the next 15 units are Chicago O’Hare, Hous­ton Hobby, Bos­ton Lo­gan, Los An­ge­les In­ter­na­tional, McCar­ran In­ter­na­tional in Las Ve­gas and Wash­ing­ton-Dulles In­ter­na­tional Air­port.
