Bag Fees Rise

EV­ERY MA­JOR NORTH AMER­I­CAN AIR­LINE has now raised its fees for checked bags ex­cept South­west Air­lines and Alaska Air­lines. Amer­i­can Air­lines and Delta Air Lines are the lat­est to fol­low the trend started by Jet Blue and matched by United Air­lines, Air Canada and WestJet.

At Amer­i­can and Delta, the fee for a first checked bag went from $25 to $30 and from $35 to $40 for a sec­ond checked bag. As of this writ­ing, Alaska Air­lines still charges $25 per bag, al­though many in­dus­try ob­servers ex­pect the car­rier to fol­low suit soon. Mean­while South­west Air­lines of­fi­cials have vowed not to charge pas­sen­gers for checked bags.
