Bag Fees Rise
EVERY MAJOR NORTH AMERICAN AIRLINE has now raised its fees for checked bags except Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the latest to follow the trend started by Jet Blue and matched by United Airlines, Air Canada and WestJet.
At American and Delta, the fee for a first checked bag went from $25 to $30 and from $35 to $40 for a second checked bag. As of this writing, Alaska Airlines still charges $25 per bag, although many industry observers expect the carrier to follow suit soon. Meanwhile Southwest Airlines officials have vowed not to charge passengers for checked bags.
